Seaweed are a great source for special polymers called phycocolloids. Under the right conditions these polymers can undergo thermal processing including extrusion, just like plastic! Our research focuses on extraction of the polymers and enhancement of their production through control over the seaweed cultivation conditions. Our engineering collaborators do the transformation of the phycocolloids into plastic.
